It is this same arid climate and careful irrigation, however, that make Mendoza Argentina's premier wine region. A wave of Italian, French and Spanish immigrants arrived from 1884 to cultivate the land, bringing with them the Malbec grape, a variety of little note in France that flourished spectacularly under the Mendozan sun and today defines the region's reputation worldwide. Wine remains at the heart of local culture, celebrated each March in the week long Fiesta de la Vendimia, and Mendoza's 550 wineries, from intimate boutiques to large scale exporters, welcome visitors along the Rutas del Vino for tastings led by the winemakers themselves.
