Alta Floresta sits on the southern edge of the Amazon in the far north of Mato Grosso, a young frontier town founded only in the 1970s. Its airstrip is the point where roads and cattle pastures give way to unbroken forest. Most visitors stay only long enough to step off the plane. From here, a short drive and a boat ride along the Teles Pires take you to the dark, tea coloured waters of the Cristalino River, where the town quickly falls away behind the trees.

Along the Cristalino, the rainforest is protected within a state park and a private reserve. Lodges here are set beside the riverbanks, and days follow the rhythm of the forest: canoe trips at dawn through quiet side channels, guided walks on shaded forest trails and climbs up steel observation towers that rise above the canopy. From the top you can watch toucans, macaws and harpy eagles crossing the treetops. Around 600 bird species have been recorded in the region, alongside giant otters, tapirs and spider monkeys. At night the forest fills with the croak of frogs and the hum of insects, and from here the Amazon stretches unbroken to the north.
