Rincón de la Vieja

In the far northwest, the earth is restless. Rincón de la Vieja National Park is a landscape of steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pots and pools of hot water, where the smell of sulphur drifts through the trees and the ground hisses quietly underfoot. The volcano itself rises above it all, its slopes cloaked in forest that changes from dry to humid as the trails climb.

Around the park lies the cattle country of Guanacaste, wide and golden in the dry season, where sabaneros still work the land on horseback much as their grandfathers did. Old haciendas welcome visitors with ranch cooking, horse riding and volcanic mud baths that leave the skin soft and warm. Waterfalls hide in the forest, and white faced capuchins and coatis are often seen along the way. It is wilder and drier than much of Costa Rica, with a character all its own.
