Turrialba is Costa Rica at its most rural and unhurried, a small market town cradled in a lush valley on the eastern edge of the Central Valley. The Pacuare River, just beyond town, is one of the finest white water rafting rivers in the world, its rapids thundering through deep gorges lined with rainforest and waterfalls that spill straight into the current. Gentler days are spent at the Guayabo National Monument, the country's most important archaeological site, where stone causeways, mounds and aqueducts built by an ancient people still channel water through the forest after more than a thousand years. Add coffee farm visits, botanical gardens and quiet country lanes, and Turrialba becomes a place that rewards anyone willing to linger.
