Unforgettable India: Exploring the Golden Triangle and Beyond

India is a place that stays with you. If I had to sum it up in a single word? Unforgettable. This journey through India’s Golden Triangle—Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur—with a heartwarming detour to Patan village, offered a perfect blend of culture, colour, wildlife, and wonder. Here’s a glimpse into my incredible adventure through North India.

New Delhi: Grand Avenues and Colonial Charm

Our Indian adventure began in New Delhi, where wide, tree-lined boulevards guide you past impressive landmarks like the Presidential Palace, Parliament House, and the famous India Gate. The capital’s calm elegance and cleanliness came as a surprise—modern yet historic, and utterly majestic. Then came the contrast…

Old Delhi: A Riot of Colour and Chaos

Old Delhi was a sensory explosion! We jumped into a rickshaw and whizzed through the cramped, chaotic lanes of Chandni Chowk. It was glorious madness: spice bazaars, sari stalls, street food carts, mosques, and temples, every corner bursting with life, colour, and noise. Don’t skip the rickshaw ride, it's the best way to dive headfirst into the heartbeat of the city.

Agra by Gatimaan Express: Fast-Track to the Taj Mahal

From Delhi, we hopped on the Gatimaan Express to Agra—a sleek high-speed train that felt like travelling business class. Spacious seats, delicious snacks, and under two hours later, we arrived at one of the world's most iconic landmarks.

Taj Mahal: A Sunrise and Sunset Love Affair

Nothing prepared me for the sheer beauty of the Taj Mahal. We visited twice—once at sunrise, as the white marble glowed soft pink, and again at sunset, bathed in golden hues. Pure magic.

We also explored the impressive Agra Fort, a red sandstone fortress with ornate carvings and sweeping views, including one of the Taj itself across the Yamuna River.

Delhi and Agra Highlights

  • The Awesome Taj Mahal
  • Frenetic Old Delhi
  • Fantastic Food
  • Gatiman Express Train
  • Agra Fort
  • India Gate

Fatehpur Sikri: The Ghost City of Emperors

A short drive led us to Fatehpur Sikri, a remarkably preserved 16th-century Mughal city that feels frozen in time. Wandering through its grand gateways and deserted courtyards was like stepping into a historical drama.

Ranthambore National Park: Where the Wild Things Roam

Next, we travelled to Ranthambore by train, India’s landscapes shifting from dusty plains to lush greenery. We went on two thrilling safari drives, spotting monkeys, deer, peacocks, and finally… a tiger! It walked calmly across our path, powerful and majestic. A true pinch-me moment.

Jaipur: The Royal Heart of Rajasthan

After a scenic four-hour drive, we arrived in Jaipur, the famed Pink City. Its terracotta-hued buildings and regal energy were enchanting.

We:
Bargained in bustling bazaars for colourful bangles and spices
Rode a 4X4 Jeep to the hilltop Amber Fort
Explored the opulent City Palace, still partly home to the royal family
Gazed at astronomical wonders at Jantar Mantar, Jaipur’s ancient observatory

Jaipur combined the grandeur of Rajasthan with lively, everyday charm.

Patan Village: A Heartfelt Glimpse of Rural India

Our detour to Patan, a tiny rural village, was perhaps the most soul-stirring part of the trip. We arrived by camel cart, greeted by a local band with drums, dancing, and the warmest smiles.

There were no luxury hotels or tourist crowds—just pure hospitality, home-cooked food, and genuine connection. It felt like we’d stepped into a Bollywood scene… but real. Rural India offers some of the most authentic travel moments. Embrace them.

Ranthambore and Jaipur Highlights

  • Indian Safari in Ranthambore
  • Spotting the elusive Tiger
  • The majestic Amer Fort
  • Jaipur City Palace
  • Jaipur Palace of the Winds

Final Thoughts: Why You Must Experience the Golden Triangle

From the pink glow of the Taj Mahal to the jungle silence before spotting a tiger, from the clatter of Delhi rickshaws to the peaceful charm of Patan—India surprised, delighted, and humbled me at every turn.

If you’re planning a Golden Triangle tour from the UK, here’s my advice:

Go with an open heart.
Say yes to the unexpected.
Don’t miss a sunrise at the Taj or a rickshaw ride through Old Delhi.
India will stay with you. And you’ll be all the better for it.
