April is a month of transition, as autumn colour spreads through the Blue Mountains and Tasmania while the tropical north dries out and reopens. Easter brings families to the coast for one last long weekend of summer weather, and whale sharks begin gathering off Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, drawn by the coral spawn. Uluru enters some of its most comfortable weeks, the desert heat finally loosening its grip.

  • The Australian Open gets underway in Melbourne, filling Rod Laver Arena and the surrounding parklands with tennis through the height of summer.

  • Monsoon storms roll across the Top End, filling Kakadu's floodplains and sending Litchfield's waterfalls into full flow.

  • The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race sails into the Derwent in the first days of the month, its arrival on the Hobart waterfront overlapping with the food, wine and live music of the Taste of Summer festival at Princes Wharf.
