What truly sets Purmamarca apart is the Cerro de los Siete Colores, the Hill of Seven Colours, which rises just behind the town in a striking sweep of reds, purples, yellows and greens. These bands of colour are the result of millions of years of mineral deposits and sediment, layered and folded by ancient geological upheaval. A short walk along the Paseo de los Colorados trail brings visitors right into this technicolour landscape, weaving between eroded rock formations and offering ever changing views as the light shifts throughout the day.
A short drive from town, high on the Andean plateau, lies the Salinas Grandes, one of the largest salt flats in South America. This vast white expanse stretches to the horizon in every direction, a stark and beautiful contrast to the colourful hills of Purmamarca below. Formed by an ancient evaporated lake, the salt crust here is mined by local communities using traditional methods, and on a clear day the mirror like surface creates striking reflections of the sky above, making it one of the most photographed landscapes in the region.
