Arenal Volcano dominates every view from La Fortuna, its near perfect cone rising out of the rainforest, often wearing a collar of cloud. The town sits at its foot, small and lively, with a central square and a white church set against that great dark slope.

The volcanic heat that shaped the land now feeds the hot springs scattered through the surrounding forest, pools of warm mineral water perfect for an evening soak under the stars. By day, the La Fortuna Waterfall plunges around 70 metres into a jade green pool. Hanging bridges carry you through the treetops, and sloths, toucans and tiny red poison dart frogs reward a slow walk along the forest trails. Further west, Lake Arenal stretches out calm and wide, its shores lined with farmland and forest. This is Costa Rica at its most elemental: fire, water and rainforest, all within sight of one another.
