Uxmal rises from the Yucatán scrubland in a way no other Maya city quite manages, its buildings curved and layered rather than stacked in straight lines. The Pyramid of the Magician dominates the skyline with its unusual oval base, said by legend to have been built in a single night by a dwarf sorcerer. Nearby, the Nunnery Quadrangle unfolds around a vast courtyard, its four long buildings covered in intricate stone lattice work, mosaic serpents and rain god masks stacked in tidy rows. The limestone here has weathered to a pale gold, and in late afternoon light the carvings seem almost to shift and breathe.

Unlike the crowds at Chichen Itza, Uxmal often feels quiet, even solitary, the jungle pressing close on all sides and iguanas sunning themselves on ancient steps. Climb what you can and the view stretches over a canopy broken only by other ruins in the distance, part of the wider Puuc region.
