Nevada Holidays

Nevada is the seventh largest of the 50 states but is one of the most sparsely populated. Carson City, in the western part of the state, is the capital. Gambling is legal in Nevada, and Las Vegas, the state’s largest city, is known internationally for its opulent casinos and as an entertainment destination. Nevada is also home to the Hoover Dam, which was the single largest public works project in the history of the United States, and Lake Mead, the largest reservoir in the country.

Nevada Places of Interest

Las Vegas is the first stop for most travellers to Nevada; here, you can gamble and wander through the wildly decorated casinos on the Strip before dancing the night away at one of the city's nightclubs. Adventure-seekers should head to Great Basin National Park, where you can hike in the backcountry and explore abandoned silver mines. In the Valley of Fire State Park, explore the sandstone formations which, according to the Desert USA website, appear to be on fire when the sun hits them. For skiing, snowboarding, swimming and socializing, head north to beautiful Lake Tahoe. In Reno, spend more time gambling and watching the eccentric locals.

Nevada  History

Nevada has a rich history of silver mining and exploration. Several sites throughout the state allow you to experience and learn about the different phases of history, including the Western Folklife Centre and the Sherman Station Visitors Centre & Historic Exhibit in Elko. Don't miss a trip to historic Virginia City near Carson City in northern Nevada, and Mormon Station State Historic Park in Genoa. At Gold Point, explore a ghost town, complete with abandoned buildings; according to the Nevada Day Trips website, the town is out of the way, so plan your visit ahead of time.

Nevada - Off the Beaten Path

In sparsely populated Nevada, it is easy to get off the beaten tourist path. Highway 50, known as the "Loneliest Road in America," follows the approximate path of the historic Pony Express riders, according to the Route 50 website. South of Interstate 80 lie the Ruby Mountains, where you can hike, camp and fish without seeing another person for days. In north western Nevada, where there are only a few tiny towns, you will find empty stretches of river for fishing; check out the Truckee River and Walker Lake.
