Discover South Africa: Our Garden Route and Eastern Cape Safari Adventure

If you’re dreaming of a South Africa holiday from the UK, prepare to be amazed. South Africa is a country that dazzles with diversity—rugged coastlines, luxurious safari lodges, world-class cuisine, and vibrant cities all combine to create an unforgettable escape.

We recently returned from a South Africa Garden Route and safari adventure, exploring the wild beauty of the Eastern Cape, the charm of the Western Cape Winelands, and everything in between. Whether you're a seasoned traveller or planning your first visit, South Africa offers the perfect mix of wildlife, culture, and natural splendour.

Eastern Cape Safari: Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Our journey began with a bucket-list experience—a luxury South African safari at the legendary Shamwari Private Game Reserve, just over an hour’s drive from Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth).

We stayed at Long Lee Manor, an Edwardian-style lodge with veranda suites overlooking the open plains. Upon arrival, we were greeted with warm towels, homemade lemonade, and a level of hospitality that set the tone for the rest of the trip.

Each day included morning and evening game drives, where we spotted lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, cheetahs, and countless bird species. Our ranger, Jaques, brought the African bush to life with his knowledge and passion. Despite the elusive leopard hiding from view, seeing four of the Big Five was nothing short of magical.

Meals at Shamwari were equally memorable—fresh pastries at sunrise, gourmet dinners under the stars, and wine pairings that rivalled anything we’ve had in Europe. If you're looking to splurge on a once-in-a-lifetime safari, consider staying at Sindile, Shamwari’s luxury tented camp complete with plunge pools and wood-burning stoves.

Kariega Game Reserve: Five-Star Safari Under the Stars

For our next safari stop, we travelled to Kariega Game Reserve, where we stayed at Settlers Drift—a luxurious tented camp nestled along the riverbanks. With floor-to-ceiling views, standalone bathtubs, and log fireplaces, this was glamping taken to another level.

One of the most memorable moments? Stargazing. The remote location meant zero light pollution, and we saw the Milky Way stretch across the night sky.

Kariega offers several lodges to suit all styles and budgets, from family-friendly accommodation at the Main Lodge to the more secluded River Lodge.

Safari Highlights

  • Exciting Game Drives
  • Excellent Wildlife Spotting
  • Veld Sundowners
  • Wonderful Cuisine
  • Glamping Experience

Driving South Africa’s Garden Route: A Road Trip Like No Other

After our safari adventure, we began our Garden Route self-drive—one of the most scenic coastal routes in the world. The roads are easy to navigate, and hiring a larger vehicle made the drive more comfortable, especially when packing in souvenirs!

Plettenberg Bay & Tsala Treetop Lodge

We started in Plettenberg Bay, a relaxed coastal town perfect for beach lovers. The Plettenberg Hotel impressed with cliffside views and boutique shops just a short stroll away. But it was Tsala Treetop Lodge that stole the show—hidden away in the forest canopy, with suites featuring private plunge pools and open-air showers. It felt like something out of a luxury travel magazine.

Knysna & Oudtshoorn: Coast to Karoo

Next stop: Knysna, a charming lagoon-side town with bohemian vibes and incredible seafood. We stayed at Knysna Hollow, a charming garden-style retreat that offered great value and a peaceful night’s rest.

From Knysna, we headed inland to Oudtshoorn, the Ostrich Capital of the World, located on the edge of the Klein Karoo. Our stay at La Plume Boutique Hotel was a highlight—set on a working ostrich farm, the property oozed rustic charm with vintage furnishings, vast views, and hearty, farm-to-table cuisine.

Garden Route Highlights

  • Luxury Tree House - Tsala Treetops
  • Easy Pleasant Drives
  • Beautiful Coastline
  • Quaint Knysna
  • Rugged Oudtshoorn

Hermanus & Grootbos: Coastal Charm and Conservation

From the dry plains of the Karoo, we made our most scenic drive yet—through mountain passes and into the coastal cliffs of Hermanus. Here, we checked into Grootbos Nature Reserve, a 5-star eco-lodge overlooking the ocean, surrounded by 3,500 hectares of indigenous fynbos and forest.

This was a different kind of South African safari—focused on botany, marine life, and sustainability. Activities included botanical 4x4 drives, horse riding, and even seasonal whale watching. We ended each day with a glass of local wine and panoramic views from our private deck.

Winelands Wonder: Franschhoek & Stellenbosch

No South Africa itinerary is complete without a visit to the Western Cape’s Winelands. We took the scenic route via the Franschhoek Pass, which offered spectacular views and endless photo opportunities.

Our base was Lanzerac Hotel in Stellenbosch, a working wine estate with over 330 years of history. Daily wine tastings, vineyard walks, and delicious dining made this the perfect place to unwind before heading to the city.

Cape Town: Where History Meets Natural Beauty

We wrapped up our South Africa tour in Cape Town, a city that never fails to impress. From the towering Table Mountain to the colourful Bo-Kaap neighbourhood and bustling V&A Waterfront, there’s something for everyone.

We stayed at two very different but equally enjoyable hotels: The President Hotel in Bantry Bay, which offered resort-style amenities, and the charming Winchester Boutique Hotel, with its 1920s architecture and ideal location for sunset cocktails.

A ferry ride to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, added depth to our visit and served as a powerful reminder of South Africa’s complex history.

Western Cape Highlights

  • Beautiful Cape Town
  • Grootbos Private Nature Reserve
  • Coastal Hermanus
  • Wine towns of Stellenbosh and Franshoek
  • Robben Island Museum
  • V&A Waterfront

Whether you're planning a South Africa honeymoon, a family wildlife adventure, or a Garden Route road trip, this country truly has it all.
