When is the best time to visit New Zealand?

When planning your New Zealand holiday, the time of year can make a big difference to your experience. Located in the Southern Hemisphere, New Zealand’s seasons are opposite to those in the UK, meaning summer runs from December to February and winter from June to August.

With its unique maritime climate, visitors can often experience all four seasons in a single day so it’s best to pack layers and be prepared for any weather.

To help you choose the best time to visit New Zealand, we’ve created a detailed seasonal travel guide highlighting the country’s weather, attractions, and top experiences throughout the year.

March to May (Autumn)

Autumn is one of the best times to visit New Zealand, offering warm sunny days, crisp evenings, and fewer crowds at popular attractions. It’s the perfect season for outdoor adventures such as hiking, cycling, and wine tasting, while the golden autumn light transforms the landscapes into a photographer’s dream.

Events & Festivals

  • March: Hawke’s Bay Food & Wine Classic, Hokitika Wildfoods Festival, North Canterbury Wine and Food Festival, Dunedin Fringe Festival
  • May: Bluff Oyster Festival

June to August (Winter)

Winter in New Zealand brings cooler temperatures and breathtaking scenery. The North Island enjoys mild days averaging around 14–15°C, while the South Island’s alpine regions transform into a snowy wonderland, especially around Queenstown and Wanaka. It’s the ideal time for skiing, snowboarding, and cosy lodge stays surrounded by mountain views.

Events & Festivals

  • June: Winetopia (Wellington), LUMA Southern Light Project (Queenstown)
  • August: Wellington on a Plate

September to November (Spring)

Spring in New Zealand is a beautiful time to visit, with longer sunny days, blooming wildflowers, and adorable baby wildlife making an appearance. As the winter snow melts, rivers and waterfalls surge into full flow, especially in Fiordland, where the scenery is at its most spectacular. With fewer crowds and mild temperatures, it’s a perfect season for outdoor exploration and photography.

Events & Festivals

  • September: Whitianga Oceans Seafood Festival, International Hobbit Day (22 September), World of Wearable Art, Queenstown Winter Festival
  • October: Winetopia (Auckland)

December to February (Summer)

Summer is the most popular time to visit New Zealand, bringing long sunny days and warm temperatures averaging between 21°C and 24°C. It’s the perfect season for outdoor adventures such as hiking, cycling, sailing, and kayaking all while experiencing New Zealand’s stunning natural beauty. With vibrant cities, golden beaches, and lively holiday energy, summer offers the ultimate Kiwi experience.

Events & Festivals

  • January: Toast Martinborough
  • February: Marlborough Wine & Food Festival, Napier Art Deco Festival
