The First African Baptist Church, founded in 1788, is one of the oldest African American churches in the U.S. Nearby, the ultramodern museum the Jepson Centre displays contemporary art, while the riverfront is lined with chic cafes and shops. Beyond the historic district, the Southern-Gothic statuary of Bonaventure Cemetery starred in the popular novel and film “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.”
